Types of Automotive Insurance Coverage

Basic Coverage

This refers to the minimum amount of insurance that is required by law to operate a motor vehicle on public roads. It includes $200,000 public legal liability, $300,000 in accident benefits for the insured person and $1,000,000 underinsured motorist protection. It does not offer any physical damage to your own vehicle.

Hit-and-run coverage protects you and your vehicle. It's available to every BC resident, even if you don't own or insure a vehicle. If you're eligible, the $200,000 coverage applies to damage, injuries or death. Inverse liability protection covers you in parts of Canada or the U.S. where local laws don't let you claim against the person who caused your crash.

Your vehicle repair costs are covered up to 100 per cent (less if you were partly at fault for the crash). For example, if you were 25 per cent at fault, you'll receive 75 per cent of the cost of repairing your car.

Optional Insurance

Optional insurance allows you to purchase additional liability limits to protect you in the event of a lawsuit. When purchased, it also gives you physical damage coverage on your vehicle with a stated deductible. The deductible can be changed according to how much you are willing to pay in the event of a loss. Generally, the lower the deductible amount is, the higher the premium you would pay and vice versa.

Collision Insurance

This coverage is sometimes confusing for motorists. When this optional coverage is purchased, if your vehicle is involved in a crash and it is your fault, your insurance would pay for the damage to your vehicle, subject to the appropriate level of deductible selected. It is also referred to as “own damage”. Simply put, it is damage that you caused to your own vehicle. It does not refer to damage done to other vehicles. This is covered under the basic insurance.

Comprehensive

This includes glass breakage (including the windshield), theft, attempted theft, vandalism, falling or flying objects, windstorm, impact with animals and more. Deductibles work in the same way as they do with collision except for the windshield which usually carries a smaller deductible.

Specified Perils

Specified perils generally includes the same coverage as comprehensive but excludes the following: vandalism, windshield and impact with animals.

Claims under your comprehensive or specified perils coverage do not affect your insurance discount.
